SNIPER - appx. 18 yo, grullo mare

Sniper is an approximate 18 yo, 15 H, Quarter Horse Grullo mare that we rescued from a kill pen in Texas.  We were told she is approximately 17 yo and that an 11 yo girl use to ride her.  Sniper became blind in her left eye so she was sold.  When we got her she was very thin, had poor hooves, and it appears the eye injury is new as she paces a lot and seems to still be adjusting to it.  Sniper has old scars on her back legs but they are only cosmetic as she is completely sound.  Sniper will be available after she has been rehabbed and begins training to transition to being ridden with one blind eye.

    UPDATE:

Sniper has had her teeth floated recently and been dewormed again.   Her teeth were in very poor shape and will need to be floated yearly. The vet approximated her to be about 17 - 18 yo.  She still needs to gain weight, but he said light riding would be ok.

    UPDATE:

Sniper will saddle and you can pick up all her feet to clean and trim. She trailer loads great too. I have  ridden her with a hackmore and snaffle bit which she takes just fine as well.  She willingly rides out to trail ride alone or with another horse and her eye does not seem to bother her.  She walks, trots, stops, and backs up.  I have not loped her due to her needed to still gain weight.  She seems to enjoy going out for trail rides.  Sniper is just the sweetest mare.  I have yet to see her lay her ears back at another horse!

Sniper's biggest issue is standing tied at the trailer at length.  If you are working with her she's fine, but if you walk away she occasionally starts to paw.  I believe she just needs more time learning to stand tied quietly and this will improve in time.

I'd say Sniper is best suited for an intermediate rider as she does not neckrein and I believe needs to have a confident rider to ensure she remains confident under saddle due to her blind eye.

    UPDATE:

We have led kids around on sniper and she accepts them with no issues.  Nothing really seems to work her up.  She's very forward moving and is not a dead head but is not hot by any means either.
