Skyla came to us as an owner surrender. Skyla is a mustang mare that was sold by JT Livestock in Texas. When the new owner got her she was not what was presented and was severely underweight and neglected and they were unable to care for her special needs in this condition. Skyla has a long road ahead of her of veterinary care, good feed, and supplements to gain weight before she can be evaluated and trained. Skyla was sold as a 16 year old by JT Livestock but we believe she's closer to being in her 20's; however, her brand is unreadable so we can't be sure.
UPDATE: We were able to obtain a title from the BLM and a brand release from the ND Stockmen's Association for Skyla. According to the BLM, Skyla was born in 1996 making her 26 yo and from Nevada. Since we've had her, Skyla has come so far and I've grown quite fond of her. She will come running in from pasture when we call her for her feeding time. We've even led kids around on her bareback which she takes in stride. Skyla is easy to catch but is a bit pushy on the ground so we are working on that. Skyla will pick up all feet and stands tied with no issues. She is sound and has no lameness issues. Skyla still has quite a bit of weight to gain so we have not ridden her under saddle. Skyla has had her teeth floated, been dewormed, and seems to be gaining weight well. Skyla has a ton of energy and I would never guess she is 26 yo as she doesn't act like it. She is a tough, sweet horse that I could see living well into her 30's.
UPDATE: Skyla continues to gain weight but still has more to add to her topline. Skyla picks up all feet and trims with no issues, she stands tied, and will trailer load. She does seem concerned with the other horses when not with them so she will need someone willing to work with her on that. We have put kids on her bareback and led her around which she does with no problems. We have ridden bareback as well. She will ride out but she will test you when leaving the yard if she's not being led so she would need an intermediate rider at least. Skyla does have energy and is not a dead head.
UPDATE: Due to the increase in owner surrender horses, Skyla is available for adoption prior to completion of saddle training. Her adoption fee will likely increase once a trainer begins working with her. If you are interested in Sklya with her current status, please contact us.
Please consider sponsoring. If you are interested in adoption prior to completion of her rehab and training please contact us as this is possible a case by case basis.
