Raven is an approximate 13 yo Black Quarter Horse Mare, but as with most rescues could possibly be older. She's approximately 14.2 Hands. Raven was a kill sale rescue from auction. After the auction I spoke with the owner who told me the following:
She is a microchipped purebred Quarter Horse going back to Pudden Head. He said he broke her as a 2 year old and used her for his several thousand acre ranch for cattle for approximately the last 10 years. He said that he needed to "cull his horse herd" and he chose her because she occasionally bucks. I asked him to clarify if it's every time. He said not at all but that she'd do it at the worst times. His example would be that he would be running flat out after a steer and he'd be leaning forward and she'd suddenly plant and buck. He said she'd also occasionally buck when first saddled then would be fine. He said that's why he picked her to sell and he ran her through the auction as kill because he didn't want to "have anyone deal with her anymore".
I did notice that she has two white spots on either side of her back, a little farther back than where one would normally see saddle spots. My thoughts are years of a poor fitting saddle could very likely have caused injury causing her bucking issue; however, I don't know that for sure. Raven did appear off when we got her so we have started her on Summit Joint Performance. This is a monthly IM injection that is $34/month that can be ordered online and is shipped directly to your home. She seems much better on this and we believe this may have been contributing to her pain and bucking; however, we cant' say for sure. Raven should remain on this supplement when adopted.
I have saddled Raven, but I did not ride as I will be getting a chiropractor out to look at her in the future and will be training under saddle next spring. For now we are working on trust and gentling because she's very cautious around people. Not crazy or mean, but not a real friendly horse. The little bit I have worked with her she has come around for me. I think she is a horse that just needs "her" person she can trust and if you can gain her trust you'll have one heck of a horse that's insanely beautiful to boot!!
Raven is still showing soreness that we cannot pinpoint so she is currently in rehab.
