Ace is an off the track standardbred gelding that was raced for many years and won just under a half million dollars on the track and then tossed away at auction because he was too sore to race.
Ace was really sick and lame when we got him. He had strangles which turned into purpura hemorrhagica. Ace took daily shots like a champ and never once got upset with us for having to do so. Ace has arthritis in his hocks and knees from his racing days so we started him on a monthly injection of summit which has helped immensely (This is approximately $39/month). Ace walks around with no limping or pain now, but if he is to trot fast or lope he limps.
Ace was adopted and loved and recently returned to us due to a divorce. He extremely well behaved. He stands tied quietly, picks up all hooves to trim with no issues, can doctor for anything and he accepts it, trailer loads and unloads wonderful. He leads great and is very respectful on the ground. Ace is the low end of the totem pole and I have yet to see him pin his ears at another.
Ace can be driven at a walk without a heavy load but that's about it. I have also led my kids around on him which he does with no problems. Ace cannot be used for more than walking or he will get sore and while we've saddled him and led kids around he does not know how to ride under saddle, only drive.
The perfect home for Ace would be someone who wants to have a safe horse for their kids to be around and lead around on that do not have the desire to push him further or ask too much of him. He simply needs and deserves to have the final retirement home.
